Duck Decoy Spreads - Adding Some Realism

One thing that I notice from hunters over and over again is that to a fault hunters mimic other hunters.  This can be good, but to really do well on public hunting grounds you need to stand out a bit.  To that end, rather than employing the same duck decoy spread as everyone else, let's mix it up a little and add something that the ducks don't see every day.  One of the easiest ways to do this is to add different species to you decoy spread.  In the areas that I hunt we see a fair amount of teal, pintail and wood ducks.  So I add up to 6 of each.

Now I am a stickler, so when setting out the decoys, I make sure the teal decoys are all in a group next to each other and the pintail decoys are all in a group.  If you look in the wild, different duck species will flock together, but often stay in small groups together within the larger flock.

Try it this fall and see if it helps you finish more birds!
