Ken Harris Decoy

When I was doing a bunch of research surrounding the wide array of hand carved duck decoys for sale I was taken back by some of the high quality carvings available from Ken Harris. The Ken Harris decoy is well known for its use of coarse and fine strokes on the same decoy that really make them stand out and be striking.   Harris is well known for being from Woodville, New York (for on the bottom of his decoys there was a stamp with his name and location prominently displayed often in a bright white).

Many collectors are fans of his work due to the legacy he left.  The modern decoy carver emulates many of the features on his works, specifically the coarse and fine brush strokes that are a hallmark of his work.  When it comes time to find one of these decoys you need to remember that many of his early works were used out in the duck blind!  And we are talking on the water, not in some farm field hunting out of layout blinds like we would see today.  For that reason, it is often hard to find his decoys in pristine condition.  For those of us familiar with duck hunting, it is quite evident that the weather accompanying it is often quite nasty. He almost always used glass eyes as well, which stand the test of time and are quite striking when seen in person.

Where to buy Ken Harris Decoys

When it comes time to purchase a Ken Harris decoy be ready for a decent amount of time searching.  You wont' be finding these on the shelves at a local sporting goods retailer since Ken passed away almost 30 years ago.  For that reason you will need to scour the web.  Ebay is almost always your best bet.  I have included as many links as I could find on Ebay right now in the above pictures.  Click on a link to see what they have to offer.

What kind of decoys did Ken Harris Carve?

When it came to species, Harris carved them all.  If you have seen the beauty of a Ken Harris wood duck decoy in person you are well on your way to becoming a lifelong fan.  The wood duck's beauty really brings out the best in his carvings.  Of course he ran the full gamut in what he carved, so you will find mallard, pintail, cinnamon teal, blue wing teal, green wing teal, gadwall, black duck, and all the puddle ducks, but also an impressive array of diving ducks such as the canvasback, redhead, bluebill, ring neck, bufflehead, and even some sea duck decoys.  Much like fine duck calls, the hand carved duck decoys go a long way to bringing us back to a simpler time.  All that said, Ken stuck to wood.  You won't find any cork duck decoys for sale from him, he was a wood carver and a very good one at that!
