As is the case in all walks of life, the never ending attempt to reach perfection and reinvent the way we do things guides us ever onward. In the hunting world, there always seems to be new gadgets, duck hunting gear and equipment to pass the time. For those that are new to the duck hunting game it can prove to be quite daunting. For those that are well versed it can still seem to be quite an undertaking to enter the 21st century of waterfowl hunting. Don’t fret though, the additions and innovations to the duck hunting game are designed to make your life easier, more comfortable and more prosperous in the field.
When it comes to all hunting, and duck hunting is surely no exception, being in the right place at the right time is imperative. If you are in the right spot, I don’t care if you have duck decoys from the 1930’s that are chipped and faded, no duck calls on a lanyard on your neck and just about the poorest shot in the history of the earth you will do well. Much like real estate, duck hunting is all about location, location, location.
That being said, once you have a good location, it is time to find a way to be concealed from the prying eyes of passing ducks. Thankfully today’s duck hunting gear is light years ahead of the past. You can hunt fields in comfort and superior camo of layout blinds. For those that stay close to the water, duck boat blinds are available that will break up your pattern from the surroundings. If you are especially cheap you can simply use what is around you and stash your boat and hide better than even the best duck boat blind.
Duck decoys are a constant among people’s minds. The decoys of today are truly a thing to behold. The realism of the decoys of today are so much better than before. From the realistic bobbing in the water of Herter’s duck decoys to the top notch silhouettes of the greenhead gear duck decoys you have a full line of decoys to choose from. Flambeau decoys are a great find for those that are on a tight budget as they offer great value for the money, without some of the frills that other decoy manufacturers offer.
And who can forget the motion decoys on the market today. It was a decade ago that the first spinning winged decoy hit the market. Well that change in decoy logic really turned the sport on its head. If you aren’t considering adding motion to your spread you are behind the game. Even if it is a simply jerk string decoy you should be finding ways to add some realism to your duck decoy spread. Using a goose flag is another way to add some movement to your spread at a low price.
As this sites name would suggest, duck calls have also come a long way in the past 20 years. While the PS duck calls for sale in the past still hold up to the test of time, the latest calls are made from acrylic that really brings the range of duck calls to a whole other level. Adding a wood call for those close in and ducks hunted among the timber makes the combination with a loud acrylic call a thing to behold. Using both to coax those wayward ducks and in close sure things into the spread a deadly combination.
As you can see duck hunting 2010 offers some great chances for optimism. In addition to the good fall flight forecast, the duck hunting equipment available to hunters is a means to an end that all hunters strive to achieve.

Much like the great Argentina duck hunting south of the equator, there is a great bit of fun waiting south of the Texas border in Mexico. Mexico duck hunting affords for quite the experience to go with an affordable vacation and has been a destination for hunters for decades. Normally the hunters, much like in Argentina, are targeting doves. And to be sure the dove hunting can be the thing of legends, but that isn't to say that you can't enjoy some duck hunting to go with the great dove hunting south of the border. In addition to the doves there is also some of the best quail hunting you will find in the entire world.

Where to hunt ducks in Mexico?

So now that you have decided that it is intriguing to hunt duck in Mexico, where should you plan to go? Mexico is quite a large country so it isn't like you could just charter a flight anywhere and find your way into limits of ducks. Probably the most famed duck hunting spot in Mexico is the Laguna Madre. Home to the wintering area of more than 90% of the redheads in North America as well as impressive quantities of teal. And all of the varieties of teal are present, including the cinnamon, blue and green winged teal. If you are looking to extend your North America season Mexico is a great place to go. Basically all of the ducks from the USA winter in Mexico, so you would be impressed with the quantity of ducks there in the winter. The Laguna Madre is a huge lake that is very shallow (less than 3 feet deep on average) and very expansive. Due to many organizations taking a leading role, the lake is well protected to ensure that it continues to be a great place for ducks.

Hunting south of the US border can be quite phenomenal.

If you prefer goose hunting then you are better off heading to a more northern region of Mexico, the San Fernando Valley. If you are like me you will do a quick double take there. No it is not the same Fernando Valley that is so popular in California, it is a region south of Texas. Directly south of Browerville, TX to be precise. The San Fernando Valley is home to thousands of Snow Geese, Blue Geese and Specklebelly (or white-fronted geese) Geese.

So there you have it a quick synopsis of the ducks and duck hunting available in Mexico. A true adventure to be sure, and the possibility to couple the duck hunting with some top of the line dove hunting and quail hunting. And the best part is if you get it guided you won't need to lug your duck decoys or duck calls with you!

Have you ever taken a duck hunting trip to Mexico? I'd love to hear about it!

So being that it is the offseason and the only thing that I have going for me at the present in regards to duck hunting is the never ending search for inexpensive duck decoys, I thought I would look forward to next season. Now I have expanded my horizons a bit in terms of the lakes and sloughs I frequent in and around me quite a bit in the past couple of years. It is similar to a duck hunting treasure hunt if you will. That being said, I have not explored a bunch of other states and countries in the pursuit of waterfowl. I wrote a blog a while back detailing Argentina duck hunting, which intrigued me to say the least.
With that said I thought I would open it up to anyone out there who has had the good fortune of traversing the USA or other outlying countries chasing ducks. What were the great places to go that you would recommend others to visit. Is an east coast trip a must for duck hunters? Perhaps finding a way to hunt out of a layout boat in the ocean? Or maybe it is an out of the way spot that no one thinks about like Idaho (if you are from Idaho don't take this as a slap, I have heard the hunting is fabulous in the state but it does not normally get the pub that higher profile states like Arkansas and North Dakota get)? What are you thoughts? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Being that it is pretty cold up here in North America, I thought I would do a little research into warmer climes for duck hunting action. One place that really jumped out at me as a great place to go is Argentina. Now for me, the first place I think of when talking about duck hunting is not Argentina, but after doing a bit of research, perhaps it should be. The bag limits are pretty crazy, 25-40 depending upon where you are hunting in Argentina. Plus the species are mostly different than what we are used to seeing up here in North America, including "Rosy-billed Pochard, White-cheeked and Brown Pintals, Southern Widgeon, Silver, Speckled, Ringed and Cinnamon Teal and a variety of Tree Ducks".

The season is from May until August every year, allowing for a great warm up for the North American season back home if you make a trip down there. I have heard of many people taking their hand at a Mexico duck hunting trip, but never to Argentina.

Comparing and contrasting to Minnesota duck hunting I can't imagine a more start contrast than Argentina. Being on the other side of the equator makes it a completely different ballgame. As mentioned earlier the season is the other side of the year as in the northern hemisphere.

Where to hunt ducks in Argentina?

When it comes time to book that hunt there are a few options to go for when it comes to Argentina. One of the more popular provinces to hunt is Santa Fe. The areas targeted are rice fields or along the river deltas which changes based on the food prevalent and the level of the water. The Santa Fe province is located in the center of the country and has a river that eventually leads to the ocean.

Another popular province to hunt ducks in Argentina is the Santiago del Estero Province which is known for also sporting quite an impressive dove and pigeon population. If you want to do a combo platter hunt, this is likely the place for you. The Santiago del Estero Province is also in the center of the country and is adjacent to the Sante Fe province.

A final great place to duck hunt in Argentina is the Buenos Aires Province. Probably the most popular and well known place in Argentina is Beunos Aires, and luckily there is also some great duck hunting in this province as well. This province is also known for its phenomenal Perdiz and goose hunting. The best part about a trip to Argentina may be that you don't need to bring your own duck decoys or duck calls!

Have you ever duck hunted in Argentina?
