I assumed for sure that was the end of my spinning wing decoy ever working again.  Low and behold, after rescuing it from the bottom of the lake and spilling out all the water I flipped the switch and it working exactly like it always did!  After allowing it to fully dry over night I checked again to make fully sure and the same result ensued.  My Lucky Duck works as good as the day I bought it.  I doubt that Edge Expedite will be willing to cover this in their warranty when you purchase one, but to me it cements that this motion decoy is made to perfectly handle the hard condtions we all face while duck hunting.

Enter the full body duck decoy.  Placed on a stake designed to keep them just above the water allows these decoys to move freely and create the motion your spread needs.  A key bonus to this is the decoys will be more visible from above and passing ducks.  Check out the video below for a visual representation on this concept.

Do I go without a spinning wing decoy or do I attempt to use my only other alternative at 4:30 a.m. in the morning, my Mojo Dove decoy?
I decided that with a severe cold front upon us and likely new birds in the area that going without would not be a good option and so decided to go with my Mojo Dove. After seeing a mallard come cupped into my decoys allowing for an easy shot I am convinced that the Mojo Dove is a great add to your duck spread.
For those that don't want to spend the money on a Mojo Mallard, but are looking to add some motion to their spread, a Mojo Dove is a great, inexpensive way to give it a try.

Notoriously hard to hit, the mourning dove is a very sporting bird to hunt as well as often lending ample opportunities to shoot.
The two things that need to be taken into consideration here is shot size and choke combination. Any time you are targeting smaller birds in the air it pays to downsize your shot size. When it comes to doves, however, most people are shooting the same thing - 8 shot. I would definitely recommend shooting 8's or 9's when targeting doves. Give that shot size, the choke now is front and center. After much reading and noting impacts in the field I say a modified choke is the way to go for doves. Smaller birds require tighter patterns to ensure hits when you are on target. There is nothing worse than being perfectly centered on a bird only to watch it continue flying due to insufficient pattern density. I have witnessed skeet and improved cylinder having this exact affect on doves.
I suggest you try a modified choke next time you are chasing doves. Use the same thinking pattern in if you are targeting teal vs. mallards and geese.

The premise was to use a goose flag well known in goose blinds to get the attention of far off ducks. I think it is a good way to bring attention to your spread, and something that doesn't get used very often in the duck blind. I plan on picking one up and using it to bring the ducks in. I will report back. I would suggest you do the same!

Spinning Wing Decoys:
Nothing brings in ducks from great distances like a spinner.  These decoys are not meant to cause a stir in the water itself, it is the flashing wings that simulate a duck back peddling to land.  Duck go crazy over it.  The two major models to choose from are the Mojo Mallard and the Lucky Duck.

Jerk Cord:
An age old idea that still works wonders today.  The idea is that you place a rope attached to a decoy and then tethered to a stake of some sort out farther.  Pull on the decoy string and it will create a wake.  Do it while the ducks are making a pass and they will be more likely to commit on their next pass.

These are two key ways to add motion to your decoy spread.  Try one of them today and notice how the ducks react in a positive manner!

]]> http://acrylicduckcalls.com/motion-decoys/how-to-add-motion-to-your-decoy-spread/122/feed 2 Opening Weekend Observations – Duck Decoy Spread Mistakes and more http://acrylicduckcalls.com/motion-decoys/opening-weekend-observations-duck-decoy-spread-mistakes-and-more/80 http://acrylicduckcalls.com/motion-decoys/opening-weekend-observations-duck-decoy-spread-mistakes-and-more/80#comments Mon, 06 Oct 2008 19:02:30 +0000 Darin http://acrylicduckcalls.com/?p=80 So I just got home from my weekend away for opening weekend of duck hunting season.  It was a good trip, with a limit of ducks for 3 guys on Saturday and 7 birds down on Sunday.  As always the shooting could have been better, but in the grand scheme of things it was a great weekend on the marsh.  As we were paddling back both days I took some mental notes as we talked to other hunting parties on the way their hunts went.  Here is a list of my thoughts (I have touched on some of these in the past):

1. Decoy spreads - I am pretty hard on people about this, but I see it over and over again and it never ceases to amaze me.  There were guys with duck decoys out 50 yards and they would complain about the birds always wanting to just skirt the decoys and therefore not being able to get quality shots.  One party had two Air Lucky Ducks (here we can't use the motorized motion duck decoys like the Mojo duck decoys until after the second weekend) set 45 yards from their blind.  If these things work like they are supposed to then you have ducks landing for shots at 45-55 yards.  Not a good scenario, make sure all of your decoys are well within your comfortable shooting range.  I prefer 25-30 yards myself.

2. Sometimes you have to work a little harder to get that limit of ducks.  We got to our hunting spot 30 mins before anyone else was even in the vicinity of our spot.  In addition to that we walked our canoe about three quarters of a mile to get to an easier place to paddle from in the dark.  It paid off in spades.  We had better shooting than just about everyone else on our duck hunting marsh.  The guys with the next best shooting were the two next parties that got to the landing.  It won't always be fruitful, but exerting the extra energy is often what sets aside ok duck hunters from above average to great duck hunters.

Hopefully this post will help solidify some of the mistakes that I see people make and allow you to avoid them for better results in your next trip to the duck blind.

So, we know that motion in our decoy spread in important, and we just dropped some coin on our new fancy Mojo duck decoys.  But where should we put it for maximum effectiveness?  It is obvious to some, and not so much to the rest of us, but place that spinner as close to the blind in your landing zone as possible.  I usually aim for it to be 10-15 yards max from the blind.

Think about it...  If the thing works as well as advertised, the birds are basically going to want to be landing on top of it.  If you put it 40 yards from your blind, the ducks are going to try to land 40 yards away all day long!  I want my Lucky Duck to be in the exact place that I would love a duck to attempt to land.  Give it a try and notice that higher quality shots result.
