After linking hunting to money in Why Is Duck Hunting Important? Revenues for habitat & Wildlife and touching on how family traditions are important in Why is Duck Hunting Important? Family Traditions, this installment will discuss how it is important to maintain a link with nature.

Hunting in general requires a person to be outdoors. Too often in today's society we are cooped up indoors and away from anything natural. It really requires some time outside for an extended period of time to fully understand how important wild places are. Duck hunting is a great way to establish that link to the outdoors and nature in a way that lends itself to continued use. By being outdoors we can fully comprehend why nature is important and realize that we need to spend time and money to ensure that it is rightly cared for.

The next time you are in the duck blind, take a moment to fully take in all that the morning and nature has to offer.

As discussed in Why is Duck Hunting Important - Family Traditions, I think it is important to clearly state the reasons that duck hunting is an important part of our culture. Today I am focusing on the bottom line, where the rubber hits the road, money. Straight cash, homey.

Revenues coming from license and stamp fees go directly back into the environment to establish habitat. State wildlife management areas are funded through these revenues. Federal waterfowl production areas are funded through these funds.

In addition to this, a 2006 study shows that wildlife based activities (hunting, fishing, viewing and photography) account for $120 billion dollars in spending. Think of all the taxes received from that spending and the impact on local and national economies. The same study estimates upwards of 3 million jobs in the US are based in this industry.

When it comes to preserving habitat and allowing for environmentally friendly use of land, hunting provides a lot of funds for the coffers. Without hunting I fear that these pursuits would be seriously hamstrung.

A common question for people, both hunters and non-hunters is "why is hunting important". I will try to answer that question this week with a series of posts on the topic.

Reason #1: It creates a great tradition to bring families together

Like many duck hunters, my dad was the key person in getting me to love this sport. Over the years we have spent many mornings together in the duck blind and invariably when we get together outside of hunting it normally comes up in conversation. If it is not in the middle of the season, it likely involves scouting or what we are going to buy for the next season. This bond has been strengthened over the past 20 years and is key to the fabric of our relationship. It is great to have something in common with family members that everyone is passionate about. Even though you can probably recite the story that you dad tells in your sleep because you have heard it so many times, it still never ceases to put a smile on your face as he recalls the day that the divers just kept coming into the duck decoys. Yes, it is times like these that allow us the memories of family members when they have passed on by. It also allows for a deeper understanding of your family members through the time spent together hunting.

This is a key reason that duck hunting is important in my family. Do you have any reasons that duck hunting is important in your family?
