Duck Decoy Spreads – Grouping Ducks Near Similar Ducks In Your Decoy Spread

Layout Blinds » duck decoys and duck decoy spreads » Duck Decoy Spreads – Grouping Ducks Near Similar Ducks In Your Decoy Spread

As mentioned in earlier posts, I am a stickler when it comes to decoy placement.  To me it is the little things that sets apart one decoy spread from another across the marsh.  Today I would like to talk about where to place your decoys in relation to each other.

I hunt lakes where it is not uncommon to see puddle ducks (mallards, teal, wood ducks) and diver ducks (ring necks, bluebills, redheads) flying at the same time.  It is obviously a benefit if you have both types of decoys out to take advantage of whatever is flying that particular day.  In a spread with different species of birds, I think it is important to group similar species next to each other.  For that reason make sure to keep the geese decoys next to the other geese decoys and a little ways away from your puddle ducks and diver duck decoys.  Place your canvasback, bluebills, and diver duck decoys next to other diver duck decoys and a little ways away from your geese and puddle duck decoys.

Try it out next time you are in your favorite duck blind.  I think you will see a difference when you pay attention to the little details while duck hunt.

Good advice, John.

Adding to it, a bit, you should also place the blocks in a natural manner. That is, put the puddle duck decoys closer to shore, and the divers out in the deeper water.

Also, if you study live ducks, puddlers tend to spread out, helter-skelter, whereas divers raft up. Decoy placement that mimics that behavior tends to work best.

Brook,
An excellent point that I should have included in my original post. Puddle ducks as a general rule are in shallower due to how they eat (i.e. they tip up and eat from that bottom that way). The diver ducks actually dive below the surface and therefore are in deeper water as a general rule.

Appreciate the well written comment! Every little bit helps to set your spread apart from the other spreads on your favorite hunting slough.
