Take it from a guy who is slow on the uptake. ADD SOME GEESE DECOYS TO YOUR DUCK SPREAD! At least three times this year I have called geese, turned them and had them looking for a buddy to land next to and I didn't have any goose decoys out. After a couple of circles they went on their merry way. You would have thought I would have learned the first time, or the previous 2 decades when I noticed this exact same thing. Well i'm not.
So, why should you add geese decoys? On top of the fact that they are great to bag that bonus goose, ducks love them too! Plus, their large size allows for greater visibility from far off distances that ducks look. Trust me, ducks are looking from much farther away than most people realize. And while geese rarely land in a spread with just duck decoys, I have seen ducks dump into a goose only spread dozens of times.
So learn from my mistakes, add some goose decoys to your spread to increase your success while in the blind.

It’s hard to believe how many waterfowlers forget those lessons, John.
Geese decoys do several things. Yeah, they attract geese, which certainly is a good thing. They also serve as attractors, bringing in ducks who see them from far off.
Perhaps less well known, however, is that geese fall into that group known as security or confidence decoys. They represent birds so sensitive to anything that could cause problems that ducks know if they’re around, trouble ain’t. Geese, herons, etc. all make your spread more attractive.
Brook
Brook,
You are absolutely right about the confidence decoys. In fact after reading this I wrote a blog post on confidence decoys. They are a great way to increase the appeal of your decoy spread.
