Bringing ducks in close for high quality shots is always paramount to continued success. When it comes to black ducks they can be very wary. For this reason it is suggested that you mix up your decoy spread and add in some high quality decoys to the mix. If you are hunting especially for black ducks, then finding a good contingent of black duck decoys for sale is almost a requirement.
While these ducks appear very similar to a hen mallard to the untrained eye, upon closer look there is quite a stark contrast in colors to the dull brown employed by a hen mallard. In flight people often think it is their eyes playing tricks on them as one or two ducks in a flock of mallards appear markedly darker than the rest. This is a fairly common occurrence for black ducks to be in the midst of a flock of mallards during their migration. Given the fact that there are relatively few of these birds in the fall flight, unless they want to remain isolated they find a larger group to glom onto. With the large number of mallards present it is a natural fit, especially since they aren’t that far off in looks from the mallard.
Black ducks do not have any easily distinguishable trait that shows gender while in flight. Both male and females sport the same dark, drab coloring and have a very similar speculum on their wings. For this reason there is no difference in the bag limits applied to them. Even in the hand this is nearly impossible to tell without examining the inner workings of the duck.
When it comes time to target the black duck this fall while out in your duck blind I would suggest you find a way to add some black duck decoys to the mix.
