When I was doing a bunch of research surrounding the wide array of hand carved duck decoys for sale I was taken back by some of the high quality carvings available from Ken Harris. The Ken Harris decoy is well known for its use of coarse and fine strokes on the same decoy that really make them stand out and be striking. Harris is well known for being from Woodville, New York (for on the bottom of his decoys there was a stamp with his name and location prominently displayed often in a bright white).

Many collectors are fans of his work due to the legacy he left. The modern decoy carver emulates many of the features on his works, specifically the coarse and fine brush strokes that are a hallmark of his work. When it comes time to find one of these decoys you need to remember that many of his early works were used out in the duck blind! And we are talking on the water, not in some farm field hunting out of layout blinds like we would see today. For that reason, it is often hard to find his decoys in pristine condition. For those of us familiar with duck hunting, it is quite evident that the weather accompanying it is often quite nasty. He almost always used glass eyes as well, which stand the test of time and are quite striking when seen in person.
Where to buy Ken Harris Decoys
When it comes time to purchase a Ken Harris decoy be ready for a decent amount of time searching. You wont' be finding these on the shelves at a local sporting goods retailer since Ken passed away almost 30 years ago. For that reason you will need to scour the web. Ebay is almost always your best bet. I have included as many links as I could find on Ebay right now in the above pictures. Click on a link to see what they have to offer.
What kind of decoys did Ken Harris Carve?
When it came to species, Harris carved them all. If you have seen the beauty of a Ken Harris wood duck decoy in person you are well on your way to becoming a lifelong fan. The wood duck's beauty really brings out the best in his carvings. Of course he ran the full gamut in what he carved, so you will find mallard, pintail, cinnamon teal, blue wing teal, green wing teal, gadwall, black duck, and all the puddle ducks, but also an impressive array of diving ducks such as the canvasback, redhead, bluebill, ring neck, bufflehead, and even some sea duck decoys. Much like fine duck calls, the hand carved duck decoys go a long way to bringing us back to a simpler time. All that said, Ken stuck to wood. You won't find any cork duck decoys for sale from him, he was a wood carver and a very good one at that!

would you be interested a few Mint Ken harris decoys from the 60′s canvas back blue bill mallard etc? If so what value?
Pat,
I’m always interested in hearing about high quality duck hunting merchandise. Before I could offer anything I would need to see some pictures and have a better description. Mint means much different things to many people.
I have a Ken Harris and was wondering if you could tell me anything about it, including when it was carved and value.
I’d be happy to send you pictures.
Rick
Hi John,
I thought I posted a question the other day but I don’t see it here so here it is again.
I have a Ken Harris piece here that I was wondering if you could give any information on. A date range and value would be very helpful.
I hope my attempt at including a picture works, if not please respond to my e-mail address and I will send you some.
Thank you for any help offered,
Rick

Am I doing something wrong?
Twice now I’ve posted messages about my Ken Harris decoy and both messages are gone!
If anyone wants to see what I’ve got and feels they might be able to help me figure out either when it was made or what it’s value might be, feel free to contact me at krichardc@aol dot com
Rick
This is last attempt
Richard,
The picture you sent shows a reasonable amount of the top of the decoy so as to gauge condition, which it appears is in very good condition. Do you have a good picture of the bottom of the decoy?
Thanks!
Hi John,
Here are some better pictures including the bottom.

Why is it that I now see all my messages that were missing before? I must have been doing something wrong before.
I must be losing it..lol
John, Is this your site?
I thought I’d have heard from you by now. I’m not sure if I’ll be selling this I just want to know more about it.
Thanks for your time.,
Rick
Anybody have any ideas based on the pictures I provided or better yet know where John is?
Chirp, chirp, oh damn that’s the cricket call!
Let’s try quack, quack, quack, quack..that’s a duck call…lol
Sorry John, I supplied the pictures you requested and then some. I was hoping for some sort of response by now.
Seriously though, I hope nothing happened to ya.
Richard,
Sorry I thought I had responded to this earlier.
After looking at your pictures I would estimate the decoy is worth about $150. Of course seeing it in person could change things, but I think that is a solid pricing assessment.
No problem John.
$150, really? Oh well I guess it’ll stay in the family then.
I am curious what it is about those 3 pictured above that makes them so much more valuable or is it that the seller is just off about $3700 or so?
Thank for your time, John.
Rick
Richard,
My estimation is that he is off by quite a bit. If you look at what others have sold for, $150 is a good price if it is in reasonable condition. Of course vintage and condition are the greatest variables.
Thanks!
