Motion Decoy Review: Mojo Mallard vs. Edge Expedite Lucky Duck

So you are sold that adding a motion decoy to your duck spread will increase your ability to bag ducks, but you don't know which of the two majors brands to purchase?  I was there a year ago myself, here is a quick synopsis of my findings.

Mojo Outdoors "Mojo Duck Decoys

Motion decoys at times have been referred to as "mojo's" due to the high success of the Mojo Outdoors Mojo Mallard.  Being one of the first on the market to employ a direct drive system was key as earlier versions from competitors used rubber bands and the like which to spin the wings, an utter failure.  In addition to this, it has quality components that will stand the test of time.  One of the key aspects here is the aluminum wings, while most other companies go with some sort of corrugated plastic.

Edge Expedite "Lucky Duck"

Edge Expedite is a relative Johnny come lately to the motion decoy game, but have a nice product, nonetheless.  Much like the Mojo Mallard, the Lucky Duck decoy employs a direct drive motor to spin the wings.  This allows for great speed and no slippage that were seen in decoys that used pulleys.  It is also extremely quiet.  Unlike the Mojo Mallard, the Lucky Duck uses corrugated plastic for the wings, which are not as durable, but are definitely lighter and allow for slightly longer battery life.

Conclusion?  Note that both of these models employ a direct drive motor which is a great system for all motion decoys.  In fact, I would not own one without a direct drive motor every again after having lived through that nightmare at the beginning of the spinning wing decoy craze.  To me it comes down to what you want in your spinning wing decoy.  If having a durable decoy is at the top of your list, go with the Mojo Mallard.  If it is battery life I would steer your towards the Lucky Duck.

As a side note, if you often hunt deep lakes that don't allow placing a stake into the ground I would seriously consider the Mojo Floater which is tailor made for these situations.

In WA State Electric decoys are not allowed and I can’t seem to find one that works mechanically, I have seen one that works off of a fishing real with a speedometer cable but I can’t find one on the internet. anyone have a hint

  7. John says:

    Bob,

I’ll be honest, I have never heard or seen of such a thing. If you do find it I would love to hear about it. Keep in mind that these things works because of the flash of the wings mimics that of a landing duck (more specifically a landing mallard mostly). Make sure that you get that flash or you are wasting your money.

    Thanks!
